Apple Watch 10: Faster Charging, Larger Display, and a Sleeker Design

Apple Watch 10: Faster Charging, Larger Display, and a Sleeker Design

Apple today announced the Apple Watch Series 10, featuring a wide-angle OLED display larger than the Apple Watch Ultra, with the company calling it the "biggest display and thinnest design ever."

The Series 10 is 9.7mm thick, 10% thinner than the Series 9, and weighs 20% less in the stainless steel model. The aluminum versions also weigh up to 10% less, and there’s now a Grade 5 titanium option.

Apple claims it's the fastest-charging Apple Watch yet, reaching 80% charge in 30 minutes. It also includes AI-powered noise reduction during calls and allows direct music playback from the speaker.

A new depth gauge and water temperature monitor are included, alongside sleep apnea detection using machine learning. The algorithm has been tested in clinical trials and can alert users of potential sleep apnea, encouraging them to seek medical advice.

The Series 10 comes in Jet Black and Rose Gold, along with the existing Silver Aluminum. Pricing starts at $399, with cellular models priced at $499. The watch will be available for purchase on Friday, September 20.

Design and Display
At 9.7mm, it’s the thinnest Apple Watch yet, matching the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7's thickness. The Series 10 also boasts a 30% larger screen than the Series 9, with 40% brighter OLED wide-angle display. The always-on display refreshes every second instead of once per minute.

The standard aluminum case comes in Silver, Jet Black, and Rose Gold. Apple also replaced the stainless steel model with a lighter Grade 5 titanium version in Natural, Gold, and Slate Grey finishes. New matching titanium bracelets will also be available. The titanium model includes a sapphire crystal screen and uses 95% recycled materials. All Series 10 models are carbon-neutral.

Performance and Software Upgrades
The Watch 10 is powered by the S10 chip, which includes a four-core neural engine for machine learning tasks, such as double-tap gestures, crash detection, automatic workout detection, and Siri. The S10 chip also improves background noise suppression during calls, and for the first time, users can play music, podcasts, and audiobooks directly from the Apple Watch speaker.

The watch introduces a sleep apnea detection tool that uses machine learning to identify breathing issues during sleep, alerting users to seek further medical evaluation.

It runs on WatchOS 11, offering new features like pausing Activity Rings, accessing Apple's Check In safety feature, and viewing health data in a new Vitals app. It also integrates Apple's Translation app, supporting 20 languages, and curates photos for watch faces using machine learning.

Water resistance remains at 50 meters, but the Series 10 adds a depth gauge and water temperature sensor, useful for swimmers and snorkelers.

Outlook
The Series 10 offers a significant design refresh with a thinner case, larger display, and useful health features like sleep apnea detection. However, the battery life remains at 18 hours, unchanged from earlier models
